Symptoms of Infection

If your computer suddenly starts acting up and exhibiting strange behaviors, you could have a virus infection. Many of the symptoms of a virus infection are also symptoms of other problems, making it necessary to find out whether you have a virus problem or a hardware issue.

Virus Problems are Simple to Fix - Remove the threats

Before you begin troubleshooting hardware issues, your first step should be to rule out a computer virus. By doing so, you’ll save yourself a great deal of effort. If your problem turns out to be a computer virus, you won’t have to replace the hardware.

Symptoms of both Virus infections and Hardware issues include

  • system slowdowns
  • system reboots
  • system crashes
  • locked up computers
  • application crashes
  • random “glitches” on the display
  • sound problems
  • file corruption
  • hard disks that refuse to boot
  • disappearing partitions

If not a Virus, do you have Hardware Problems?

Other Symptoms which point primarily to computer viruses include

  • strange messages
  • weird text effects at the command prompt
  • disappearing files
  • changed file attributes (file size and time/date stamp)
  • strange sounds coming from your speakers

If you computer is showing any of these warning signs, you need to run a virus scan. Even if it isn’t, regular virus scans are a must. Some viruses come with “launch dates” which means you could be infected yet the virus hasn’t activated yet. When it does, let the headaches begin! Instead of waiting, run a free virus scan now!

I can only get two or three “overlays” before my computer locks up.

Hopefully, installation of your anti-virus program will solve the problem.

    Hi Brenda,

You might try iAntivirus from PC Tools. We reviewed a bunch of antivirus programs recently on Filetonic and very few are available for Mac. You can read about it here:

    and
    here (the official site):

Good luck! Let us know how it works out for you. I believe they have a free and paid version.

We’re still reviewing antispyware programs. I’ll keep an eye out for those that cover MacIntosh as well…
