How to Fix a Slow computer
There are many reasons why a computer might run slowly. Some factors have to do with the age or quality of the computer. If your computer is more than five years old you can expect it to run slower than newer computers. Additionally, an extremely inexpensive laptop cannot be expected to run as well or as quickly as a more sophisticated model. Older and less expensive computers are often equipped with less RAM memory and less powerful processors, both of which can result in slower operations.
A shortage of RAM memory may result in a slow running computer. In addition to the memory your computer has to store files (semi)permanently on your hard drive, it also has a limited ability to store information - the files and documents you are currently accessing - in its short term, operational memory. Your computer's RAM memory is refreshed each time you turn your computer off, which might provide the re-boot your computer needs or if too little RAM is a routine problem, additional RAM can be purchased to increase your computers capability.

As well as RAM memory space, your computer also has a limited capacity to store information on its hard drive. Too much information on your hard drive, including media files, music, photos and videos, might overload your computer leaving too little free space for the computer to run its operations. Cleaning up your hard drive by saving information to cds and dvds and removing excess files will increase your computers free space and might result in faster operations.
Another cause of slow computer operations might be that you are running too many programs at once. With any computer, and especially with older models, shutting down some programs, especially those that upload and download information to and from the internet may increase speed. If you are exchanging information with a server in a distant location your computer may be slowed down by the complexity of the distance and route that the information has to travel. Also, some new computers come loaded with numerous "free trial" software programs that can burden the computer and slow it down. This is especially true of less expensive models that run on economy processors. This problem can be improved by configuring the hard drive to run more efficiently and uninstalling unnecessary bulk.
If your computer is very slow to start up and if it takes a long time to respond to the clicks of your mouse or taps on your touch pad it is possible that your computer has been infected with a virus. If the computer has recently and rapidly slowed down the problem might be a bad download and the intrusion of a virus that is running programs through your computer without your knowledge. It is a good idea to run a virus check routinely and ensure that you keep your firewall and other virus protections up to date.
