Dr. Watson (Drwtsn32.exe) is a Windows program error debugger tool that is included in the Windows XP operating system. When a program crashes Drwtsn32.exe creates a report documenting the specifics of the computer at the time in order to provide information for developers to determine what caused the problem and how to repair it.

Dr. Watson logs the information that is then available for technicians and support groups to diagnose and repair program errors. The program (Drwtsn.exe) creates a file log (Drwtsn32.log) that can be delivered to support or diagnostic technicians. Dr. Watson also creates a crash dump file, which is a binary file that can be loaded into a debugger by a programmer.

Windows XP is equipped with an error reporting service that allows the user to send error reports to Microsoft when program errors are encountered. However, these reports are not registered to the systems that send them and, rather, are anonymous and confidential. Therefore, error reports logged through the Dr. Watson program should be sent to a support professional.

When a program encounters a problem and an error occurs Dr. Watson for Windows automatically opens and records the information. Dr. Watson for Windows can be configured through the Start menu of computers running the Windows operating system by clicking Start/Run and typing drwatson and clicking OK.
