Temporary files and folders often end with the file extension TMP, which means "temporary." TMP files have many uses and can speed operations while in use or provide you with a recovery option should something go wrong. For example, when using an application such as Microsoft Word with the auto-save option enabled, Word will save your document periodically as a TMP file, even if you haven't yet saved the document at all. If your computer shuts down unexpectedly, the next time that you open Word, the Recovery Pane will list the "recovered documents" so that you can resume your work.

This is just one use for TMP files as many different applications as well as your computer's operating system use this file type. By design, TMP files are supposed to self-destruct when their purpose has been served. That is, they will be deleted when no longer required by the application that generated them. However, computers don't always cooperate and do what they should do. Occasionally, TMP files won't automatically be deleted as they should. While one or two small TMP files won't hurt, if your computer is bogged down with numerous or large TMP files, performance can suffer.

TMP files are almost always safe to delete on your own. One easy way to find and delete TMP files is by going into Windows Explorer (go to the Start button, right-click it, and choose Explore) and typing in "*.TMP" in the Search box. This will search the selected folder, partition, or drive for any file ending in the .TMP file extension. Once the list of found files is completely populated, you can either delete the TMP files individually or hit the Control + A key combination to select them all before hitting the Delete key.
