The file extension DLL is responsible for causing all kinds of computer errors. DLL files are also known as Dynamic Link Library files. Each DLL file is more like a set of computer code or instructions that can be used by your computer's various applications to carry out specific instructions. Think of them like programming building blocks. Because many computer programs use similar functions, software developers can use shared DLL files to augment their programming efforts. For example, instead of creating their own code for calling up a print dialog, programmers can simply reference an existing DLL file.
So, why do DLL files cause so many problems? The problem isn't so much in the file itself, though file corruption can affect this file type just as any other file, but rather the problem lies in how DLL files are installed and uninstalled.
For example, when un-installing software, have you ever seen a message indicating that shared system files are no longer needed? This message usually prompts you to either remove the unnecessary DLL files or leave them alone. Since they are supposedly "unnecessary," most computer users will agree to remove them. However, other computer programs or functions may still need the deleted DLL file. What happens when the file is no longer available? You guessed it: computer errors.

Another issue arises when installing new applications with different DLL versions. These may be older or newer DLL files. When installing the application, the replacement DLL overwrites the current one on the system. While this is good for the new program, it can cause problems with the old program - once again computer errors are the result.
You can often solve the DLL error by reinstalling the software. This restores the original DLL file. In addition, when un-installing software, avoid the temptation to delete "unnecessary system files."
