What is a Device Driver

Most of us are familiar with the operating systems, video players, office software and other programs that reside on our computers, but most ordinary computer users may not understand the importance of device drivers.  Even though they are less familiar, device drivers are no less important, and it is a good idea to have at least a basic understanding of these important computer programs.

It can be helpful to think of the device driver as a sort of translator, one that is able to tell the computer about the various devices attached to it.  If you use a printer, digital camera or other peripheral device with your PC, you are almost certainly making use of device drivers.  These small but powerful programs translate instructions for all manner or products, including:

  • Ø Printers
  • Ø Scanners
  • Ø Cameras
  • Ø Network adapters
  • Ø Sound cards
  • Ø Video cards
  • Ø CD and DVD writers
  • Ø External hard drives

For the most part device drivers will be written by software engineers or other IT professionals.  These software engineers are often employed directly by the hardware manufacturer, and the maker of the printer, scanner or other device will make the finished device driver available on their website.

No matter what the device, it is important for computer owners to know that device drivers are specific to both the type and brand of hardware and to the operating system of the PC.  When downloading a device driver for a new piece of equipment or updating an excising driver it is important to download the version written for your specific operating system and your specific hardware model.

For instance, a device driver written for one model of printer may not work properly on another model, just as a driver written for Windows Vista is unlikely to function well in Windows XP.  It is important to gather as much information as possible, including the type of operating system being used and the specific hardware model, before searching for the device driver.

It is also important to go directly to the hardware manufacturer’s website to obtain the drivers.  The drivers on the hardware manufacturer’s website have been thoroughly tested in a variety of different environments, but third party drivers may not have undergone such rigorous testing.  This is an important consideration, since a poorly written driver could cause conflicts with other devices or even with the operating system itself.

Last but not least, it is a good idea to check for driver updates from time to time, even if everything seems to be working just fine.  That is because hardware manufacturers often discover flaws in older versions of their software, including security vulnerabilities and other critical items.  Updating the drivers on a regular basis will help keep those devices humming along while helping to ensure a safe and secure computing environment.
