XTB File Extension Description

The file extension .xtb is identified with the software package of the word processor LocoScript, included in the Amstrad PCW model microcomputers. The file extension .xtb was intended initially for the Z80 series of the machine, which was widely available during the middle part of the 1980s.

The file extension .xtb was subsequently introduced to the IBM PC compatible machine, which was growing in popularity and catered mostly to users who have experience with the program using the PCW system. The .xtb file extension related program, LocoScript, was described as a simple to learn word processing application, which was relatively straightforward, compared with other word processing programs of the time like WordStar and WordPerfect.

The Loco Script program was characterized by its extensive coverage of special characters, which it extended in the generation of the file extension .xtb, which in turn covered every possible language from the European continent, and can be easily outputted to the bundled printer of PCW. Printers at the time were limited in functionality, and usually would entail the changing of printwheels midway of the printing process to accommodate special characters, the .xtb file extension?s implementation helped to minimize this tedious task.

The PCW machine, utilized by the file extension .xtb, featured dedicated keys for the features of copying, pasting, and cutting, including the functionality of toggling formatting. The LocoScript functionality was made accessible primarily through the use of drop down menus (a feature found on modern word processing applications), which was a deviation from the keyboard based command interface of WordPerfect and WordStar.

The LocoScript program also provided accelerator keys (keyboard shortcuts) for individualized commands, allowing for speedier execution of instructions associated with the .xtb file extension. Both the accelerator keys, and the drop down menu, were located on a toolbar that was positioned on the top part of the screen. The file extension .xtb was produced by an application, which did not require an underlying operating system structure, but was capable of directly booting from the floppy. The file extension .xtb was closely associated with the external translation table of the application.
