XPM File Extension Description

The format was developed to create pixmaps for icons. Pixmaps are a kind of raster graphics. Using pixels to make up an image creates these images. Computers for the user interface use icons. Icons serve as visual shortcuts for programs or tools available in the system.

Any text editor can edit files with the XPM file extension. These files use the C programming language to describe images. Some text editors can view images stored with the file extension .xpm.

The XPM file extension is used by files, which are made up of ASCII plain text characters and a C library. ASCII characters in the file are used to write script in the C programming language. The script defines the form of the image and the colors used. The C library included is used to translate the commands stored in the file. The script stored in the file with the file extension XPM gives the programs instructions how to read the file. This way programs can read the file.

The Micro Planner Manager from Decisive Tools also uses the XPM file extension. The program was developed to provide tools for businessmen. The program is used to create projects that are saved with the XPM file extension. Versions of the software can be used with a MacOS or Microsoft Windows Operating System. Files with the file extension .xpm can contain up to 1500 operations. These are used so that the user can organize the individual tasks of a project. Files with the XPM file extension can also contain files created with the Microsoft Project software.

Another program that uses the .xpm file extension is the DESQview program by Quarterdeck Office Systems. The application was developed for DOS operated computers. It was used so that several programs can be run simultaneously on the system in different windows.

The XPM file extension was attached to files, which stored the software?s macros. Macros are used to store processes, which are triggered by a series of keystrokes. If the user keys in a series of characters with a stored macro, the actions trigger the process stored in the file with the file extension .xpm.
