XLS File Extension Description

The XLS file extension is primarily used with the Excel program by Microsoft.

XLS files can also be used with Works Spreadsheet by Microsoft, Corel Quattro Pro in WordPerfect Office, OpenOffice.org Calc, or viewed and printed by Excel Viewer. All of these programs store and manipulate data in spreadsheets for use in budgeting, accountancy, and research.

XLS file extension types are in a spreadsheet format, in workbooks that contain one or more spreadsheets with data organized by columns and rows.

While these spreadsheets are often used for text data, the greatest strength of this spreadsheet type file is its versatility with numerical data. Formulas, charts, and graphs can be created and altered dynamically to reflect changes to the numerical data. XLS files can also support imported data from other applications, such as text and images to enhance the presentation of the spreadsheets. Macros, which are scripts that can be written and embedded into XLS spreadsheets to reduce the need for repetitive tasks, are one of the advantages of this application, but may also be misused for malicious purposes.

Problems with .XLS File Format

XLS file extensions are vulnerable to infection with viruses or malware, and should be carefully checked before opening. If Windows cannot open the file, either the proper application needs to be indicated to run the file, or there is a problem with the file registry and the file should be scanned for issues such as viruses or damage to the file itself. Despite these vulnerabilities, the XLS file extension is a powerful and useful tool for anyone needing a way to store abundant data.
