XLK File Extension Description
The file extension XLK is the file format used by the Excel program, in Windows, to provide a backup for the user?s spreadsheet. The XLK file extension uses a backup mechanism, which is actually the copying of an original file so that this copy can be used to restore the original file in the event of data loss. Typically, files with the .xlk file extension are called backups and are saved on the same location as the original file.
The file extension XLK serves two purposes, namely to restore the state of a file after a disaster, also known as the disaster recovery process, and to restore the designated file after it has been accidentally corrupted or deleted. Files with the .xlk file extension are usually the user?s last line of defense against data loss.
The design of the files with the .xlk file extension is completely different from files designed for archiving, in a sense that the files with the .xlk file extension serve as secondary copies of the originals, while archives are the primary copies.
The following are the steps to activate the backup function of the file extension XLK in Microsoft Excel 5.0, 5.0c, 7.0 and Microsoft Excel 97:
After creating a spreadsheet, press F12 or choose the Save As option in the File Menu.
The Save As dialog box will open and choose General Options in the Tools command.
A box will open and check the ?Always Create Backup? checkbox.
Click OK and Save.
Through the use of the mentioned procedures, the user can automatically create a file with the .xlk file extension for the spreadsheet currently open and active when he or she saves the file. However, the user must redo the whole method, in order to activate the backup process and allow the creation a file with the .xlk file extension for each file the user wants to back up.
