WWK File Extension Description

The keyboard layout for the word processing application WordPerfect is represented by the file extension .wwk, which is a format specific to the software application. The file extension .wwk is a representation of the physical layout that can be seen on the keyboard device, and describes the appropriated placement of the keys. The .wwk file extension acts as an interpreter for the binary scan code value, which corresponds to every key on the device, and is what is understood by the hardware without regard for what character is engraved on the physical key. For example, even if the actual key represents the character E, but the file extension .wwk interprets it as the number 7, then the computer will accept the number 7 every time the E-key is pressed on the device.

The most common layout is what is referred to as the QWERTY, and represents a keyboard device that normally has 101 keys and used with a PC. This layout was based on the arrangement of the typewriter keys, which were commonly used and referred to as manual word processors. The file extension .wwk must correspond to the correct physical layout of the device, otherwise, typographic errors can occur or dead keys will result. The term dead key, in reference to the .wwk file extension, means that the layout file does not map a particular key on the device, and thus no amount of pressing will produce any result.

The file extension .wwk is sometimes classified (aside from the layout) based on the particular language or alphabetic characters that are represented in the locality. The most common execution of the file extension .wwk is in regard to the English 101 keyboard, which still remains as the default keyboard layout used by majority of computer systems. The file extension .wwk also supports various types of keyboard layouts in the market, including the DVORAK, which is probably the second most popularly used physical layout for the keyboard device.

The file extension .wwk support extends primarily to the physical layout of the keys and their corresponding codes, but not to the connection architecture of the device itself, which means that its implementation is without regard to whether it is a USB, PS/2 or the older AT type keyboard.
