WDM File Extension Description

The WDM file extension is used for files that are created and edited with the Watershed Data Management file system. The WDM system provides its users a scientific avenue of approach toward manipulation and storage of data, needed for operating these types of data models: a) hydrologic, b) hydraulic, and c) water-quality.

The WDM file extension is created through several libraries of routine functions combined with a direct-access type of structure. There are five known data set categories that can be stored in the WDM file extension. These are: 1) time series, 2) tables, 3) text, 4) vectors, and 5) space/time. The files with the WDM file extension also contain a complete list of characteristics, which are readily available for documentation and data sets' descriptions.

A WDM file extension can contain a single set of data, but can soar up to 200,000 sets. Data sets can be represented by a few attributes, or by several hundreds of attributes. Data that is contained within can have additions, modifications, and deletions.

The WDM file extension was a successful attempt by the USGS and SCS (Soil Conservation Service) during 1983. The two entities were able to apply the data set categories during that period. The WDM file extension was initially launched for MS-DOS and x86 compatible PCs.

Files saved in the WDM file extension is written in the programming language FORTRAN, and requires these 2 libraries in order to function; ADWDM and UTIL.

Files in the WDM file extension were initially modeled to be used by a program named ?ANNIE', to store, manipulate, graphically display, and statistically analyze data pertaining to watersheds. When other programs were created with the ability to access the data, which is stored on the WDM file extension, each individual WDM file was able to serve as a combined database, where data was shared between several applications on different operating systems.

Examples of some programs using the WDM file extensions are SWSTAT, DR3M, PRMS, and HSPF; these applications can perform statistical analysis that was previously found in ?ANNIE?.
