VMS File Extension Description

The file extension VMS is used by the Visual Memory Unit of the Sega Dreamcast. Sega Dreamcast is a game console that was developed by the Sega Corporation. The console is a successor to the Sega Saturn. It is also the last game console released by Sega.

The Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is a peripheral device for the actual game console. It is used to connect to memory cards that were designed for the Sega gaming console. VMU was created to provide additional storage for Dreamcast. However the program can also function as a game device on its own. Aside from being able to view and manage files with its black and white screen, the device also has game console features. It has its own speakers, buttons and directional pad.

The VMS file extension is used to save files downloaded into the VMU device. Files with the VMS file extension often contain game files and executable games. The device can be plugged on to a Dreamcast console to load games saved with the VMS file extension. Two VMUs can also connect to each other to transfer files with the .vms file extension. A connection between two VMU devices can also allow two users to play a game together.

Because of its gaming capabilities, some games that were developed for the Dreamcast created mini-games for the VMU. These mini games are also saved with the VMU file extension. An example is the Sonic Adventure Sega game. It came with a Chao Adventure mini-game that could be downloaded into the VMU and saved with the VMS file extension. The Chao mini-game allowed users to hatch Chao eggs and train the Chao.

The file extension VMS is also used by audio files that are encoded using the continuously variable slope delta modulation (CSVD). This method of encoding is used for creating digital files from analog recordings of human voices. The encoded digital voice is given the .vms file extension.

Sound files with the VMS file extension are often used for telephony applications, especially the ones that use Bluetooth technology. These devices use the 64 kbit/s version of encoded CSVD files.
