VID File Extension Description

The file extension VID is used both as a multimedia archive compression file for playback, and as a monitor file used in the earlier console environments of computer systems.

The first application of the .vid file type is with the QuickTime program of Apple, Inc., which is simply a multimedia format that includes both audio and video streams. The .vid file format also includes the compatibility of video streams to be played in MPEG-2 file format. This allows it to be played in a wide variety of video players in different system platforms.

The .vid file format is very much like the more common .mov file format and employs the same audio and video compression qualities. Both of these are similar to the other video file types, such as .mpg, .wmv, .dat, and the like, but have a slightly different compression technique in the Application Programming Interface Level or API.

This affects the .vid file type in a manner that, even if it is playable in multiple platforms, may still create playback compatibility issues with other players. The file caters only to a specific group of video file types that use other compression techniques.

Fortunately, this .vid file type is fully compatible with the Macintosh platform, as well as the other consoles created, as with the Ipod and Iphone, which support the QuickTime program for video playback.

Currently, the file type .vid is also compressed in the h.264 video codec, very much the same as the .mov format. This newest video codec enhances the digital display of video data and provides a much clearer and smoother streaming of recordings. Audio compression is also improved with 24 channels of simultaneous streaming and with a surround sound capability that provides depth and realism to sound effects.
