TIFF File Extension Description

The TIFF file extension stands for Tagged Image File Format. Files with the .tiff file extension are image files. These kinds of files are often used to produce image files, which will not lose quality when they are saved as they use a lossless compression when being sent or edited.

The .tiff file extension was originally created by the Aldus Company to provide a universal file for scanned images. Adobe Systems has since taken over Aldus to control the development of the TIFF file extension. Due to conflict in the creation of programmer generated tags, the TIFF file format has not changed since its widespread release. Until now most of these files and the codes that use them are based on 24-bit RGB uncompressed images or 32-bit CMYK technology.

Files with the .tiff file extension can contain several files with a variety of sizes, compression and multiple formats. Files with the TIFF file extension are able to do this by using tags that are attached to the header of the file. This type of file is able to have layers and pages incorporated in its images.

Microsoft?s Picture and Fax Viewer, an image viewing program that comes with the Windows platform, can view files with the TIFF file extension. The application can see files that have the .tiff file extension clearly, but are not able to do major editing tasks. The application can only change the orientation of the image, either as a portrait or landscape image.

The program MS Paint by Microsoft can open and do minor editing of files with the TIFF file extension. It can convert the file from TIFF format to other formats for images. Some minor changes like size can be achieved as well as some effects like inverting of colors, skewing, flipping or rotating an image and changing of attributes can also be achieved. Objects can also be added to the image by adding shapes, paint and drawing lines.
