TC File Extension Description

The file extension TC is attached to files that are encrypted using TrueCrypt. TrueCrypt is a software system used to store important data securely. To secure these important files, TrueCrypt encrypts the data. Encryption is the conversion of data from a form that can be read and understood into a form that is completely unintelligible to anyone unless he has a key. Important data stored in an encrypted TrueCrypt volume can be read without first supplying the correct encryption keys or password and the necessary keyfiles.

The TrueCrypt software system has two ways to let the user deny access to other people even though he was forced to give out a password. A TrueCrypt volume appears like any other normal volume. No kind of signature or identifying mark can be found on a truecrypt volume making it impossible to be identified. TrueCrypt does not really read the file extension TC of the TrueCrypt files. So unless the TrueCrypt volumes have the files with the TC file extension, which is associated with TrueCrypt, it is impossible to prove that, a file is encrypted using TrueCrypt.

Another way of denying access to an intruder is by making a hidden volume. Even when the user is forced to provide a password, only the outer volume will be accessed. The hidden volume requires another set of passwords and key files. The volume that is accessed depends upon the set of passwords and key files that is inputted.

Once a TrueCrypt volume is opened, files with the file extension TC can be copied to and from the volume. Files with the file extension TC can be dragged and dropped into the TrueCrypt volume just like ordinary disks. Files with the file extension TC are automatically decrypted once they are opened from an opened TrueCrypt volume. During the decryption process, the file extension TC is converted into the file extension that the file needs in order to be opened by the program that uses it. For example, if the encrypted file is a word document which is opened by Microsoft Word, the file extension TC will be converted into DOC so that it can be opened by Microsoft Word.
