RAR File Extension Description

File extension RAR features a compression file format that is used primarily to take up less space when storing or transferring data. It is a convenient file format for sending large amounts of data through email transmissions more quickly and efficiently. The downside of this type of file format is that special software is needed to open it.

What Is File Extension RAR?

Files that include the RAR extension or .rar at the end of the file name store compressed data. They are sometimes referred to as data containers since these files can store a great deal of data. RAR stands for Roshal Archiver, referring to its creator, Eugene Roshal and the fact that RAR files archive data. Each RAR file can contain several files, each of which can be broken into smaller files known as volumes.

Associated Applications that Open File Extension RAR?

Since the data within RAR files is compressed, it needs to be uncompressed before it can be used. Special software is needed to open or unzip RAR files. Typically, this file format can be saved to the computer and opened using one of the specialized programs. WinRAR and WinZip are two of the most popular programs used to unzip RAR files.

WinRAR is a shareware application that features a two-month trial period during which it can be used free of charge. This application is put out by RARLAB. WinZip is available through the Corel Corporation.

BitZipper is a versatile application that can be used to open RAR files as well as Zip files, Cab files, and more. It features a free trial version so that users can see how they like it. Additional programs that can be used include 7-Zip, ZigZag, and jZip.

Stuffit is the application that should be downloaded by MAC users who are dealing with files with the .rar extension. A free trial period is available with this application, after which a small fee is charged to purchase it. Another application that MAC users can use includes iArchiver.
