What is File Extension .PPT?

The proprietary presentation format, the .ppt file extension, is popularly identified with Microsoft Office PowerPoint, which is a component of the Microsoft Office productivity suite. The .ppt file represents both the presentation and slide show.

Although normally associated with MS Office PowerPoint, there are other programs known to be capable of creating the same format including StarOffice, a competing productivity suite. A few other third party applications are also capable of reading the file extension .ppt, but not modifying it; these are known as PowerPoint viewers.

Viewing .PPT File Types

Microsoft has recently released a PowerPoint viewer for the .ppt file extension. The .ppt file extension can be viewed in many handheld devices, which are known as smart phones, and which have a mobile version of the PowerPoint viewer installed.

The .ppt file extension is commonly composed of text, graphics, and even audio and video files, which are embedded within the slides. However, there are instances wherein macroinstructions or macros are also stored within the file. The macros contained within the file extension .ppt, are intended for the extended functionality of the Office PowerPoint application, to the purposes of creating a more efficient presentation.

Not all .ppt file extension are the same, for example, a PowerPoint presentation that embeds clip arts from older versions of the software applications will not be opened by the newer edition of the program. In essence, if the .ppt extension is created with Office 2000 clip arts in them, the Office PowerPoint 2003 will not allow the user to access the document. However, some third party applications may allow usage for older versions.

The file extension .ppt is also deployed under the Mac OS Operating System.
