PFA File Extension Description
The .pfa file extension is a font file, which contains data on Adobe Type 1 fonts, formatted using American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) texts. Unlike the normal fonts used by different application, the .pfa font file is considered as a system font used in a variety of applications, which has the .pfa extension compatibility support.
One distinguishing characteristics of Adobe Type I font is its use with the PostScript Language. This allows font developers to create a font program that can be used by different devices and applications under different resolutions.
Qualities of a Type I font includes:
Type I font programs, like .pfa formats, are more compact
The PostScript interpreter uses a special raster algorithm for Type I fonts that results in quality output, especially for small sizes and lower resolution fonts and environments.
Also, Type I font programs contains ?hints? that indicates the special feature of a certain character?s shape and data.
The PFA font file is created using the PostScript Language, akin to ASCII, and follows basic rules and condition before it is implemented. For basic characters in a .pfa font, the following fields needs to be addressed:
Horizontal stem of the font
vertical stem of the font
and the serif
Aside form these; the measurements must be carefully utilized for the font?s output such as:
left sidebearing point
Next character origin
Also, the .pfa file extension contains alignment measures as well such as:
Cap-height overshoot position
x-height overshoot position
baseline overshoot position
Coordinates are also included into the creation of Type I fonts in .pfa font files following the X and Y axis. In order to open or use the .pfa font file, it has to be placed on the system folder for fonts, before it can be detected by applications.
