PDF File Extension Description

The PDF Personal Document format, created by Adobe, is the current standard for document transfer between computers.

Since each computer is different, transferring documents using standard word processing programs often results in problems viewing the files on the recipient’s computer. PDF files prevent this problem by retaining the formatting of the original document, regardless of the fonts available on the recipient’s computer.

PDF’s can be created from word processing programs, or can be created by scanning a paper document, making them an excellent choice for document transfer. Additionally, PDF files can be made editable, allowing the recipient to fill in blank fields, making them ideal for applications and forms. Many universities, for example, offer their applications as editable PDF files, which the user fills in, prints and sends away in the mail or returns to the university via email.

PDF File Standard

Adobe Acrobat is the Standard for opening PDF Files: The Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free application, distributed by Adobe and available on a variety of platforms, which allows any user to view, fill in and print Adobe PDF files. It costs nothing to obtain and use and is a relatively small download. Most new PC’s do not come bundled with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, so users will have to download it from Adobe’s website.

For users who want to create Adobe PDF files, the full version of Adobe Acrobat is the preferred choice, allowing users to scan documents, then edit and save them as PDF files; alternately users can “print to PDF” from any web browser, word processor or other program capable of printing.

There are a variety of third-party PDF readers and editors available; however, none of them compare to the fully-featured Adobe offerings and are considered to be “budget” choices.
