P File Extension Description

The file extension P is an unusual, but tested, file format created during the early days of modern computing. It is being utilized in several fields, such as graphics, programming, and procedure modules.

The earliest documented usage of the P file type was during the introduction of the Sinclair ZX81 in 1981. The primitive computer model had a television-like display and a membrane keypad for input. Graphics in the P file format were limited to a maximum resolution of 64 by 48 pixels, and without support to color display. So primitive was the .p file extension for graphic display characters and block figures that the main purpose of the machine was for text based display. Only with the advancement of computer technology was the drive for better display was realized. Nevertheless, basic games that required simple block figures had been created, such as chess and some text-dominated variants, like Wizerdry and Dragon's Lair.

The .p file format was also utilized by the earlier versions of the highly successful programming language Turbo Pascal. Prior to the 6th version of the said application, the compiler saved the user-created source code into the .p file format. This .p file extension was the predecessor of the much more known and later version -- the .pas file format. The .p file extension is a structured source code with directives and loaded libraries as defined to integrate the different commands from each loaded module into the main body process. It also supports an integrated development environment, or IDE, which provides programmers a debugging feature, and allows them to be notified of syntax errors or inconsistencies before being finalized into an executable file.

As for the later use of the P file extension, the MATLAB application is widely used today as a mathematical computing language, which supports limited programming. Purely focused on numerical and matrix manipulation for engineering and related applications, the P file type used in the MATLAB application functions as a binary runtime file.
