NSF File Extension Description

The file format NSF is identified to be associated with two programs, namely the Lotus Database Application and the Nintendo Emulator System. The Lotus Database System utilizes the file extension .nsf for its general database notes and file archive. It is a simple database format, wherein the information regarding listings and data arrays are stored and used specifically by the Lotus Notes Client -- a commonly used database management application for Domino servers.

These .nsf file extensions reserved for the Notes Database file types are unique from other database archive files, in a way that they are based and constructed around contents of documents and are not in the usual object defined or relation accessed strings and directives. These .nsf file types are, instead, a replica of the file directory of a Domino Server used in an institution.

The .nsf file format, which stands for Notes Storage Facility, has different components of data stored, namely User Data, which contains the attachments and rich text formatting, Application Data, which includes the forms, agents, and images, the Security component, which includes the security keys and certificates, Control Module, which is defined by the display and replication characteristics of the file, and a small bit of unused space for additional needed information and addenda.

The other program using the .nsf file format is the NES emulator program, which comes in a variety of names, depending on the independent developer. The .nsf file extension in this program is used as an audio file for the musical pieces for the different Nintendo games. Using an 8-bit compression method, it is expected that the quality of audio playback is rather lossy and sparsely channeled. Nevertheless, the .nsf file extensions being loaded by the different NES Emulators retain their familiar and authentic NES music to accompany the actual game.
