NDX File Extension Description

The files in the NDX file extension can also be referred to as the GROMACS index file, and is commonly named as ?index.ndx?. Files in the .ndx file extension are generated from high performance algorithms derived from the C and FORTRAN programming languages. Using 2 GROMACS utility commands creates files of the NDX extension, these are:

make_ndx ? this is used for data containing atoms, and chained names with numbers.

mk_angndx ? this is used for data containing angle values.

Files saved in the NDX extension are saved in a plain-text file. The syntax on it is clean and straightforward. There are many consistency checks done while creating the NDX file to ensure it is error-free. The majority of the tasks used in index group creation can be created by hand efficiently. The NDX file extension is compatible with any text editor like notepad, WordPad, VI, etc. and also provides options for several output.

When used with the GROMACS utility, grompp, files of the NDX file extension can also store data related with molecules and atoms. This is called a topology file. It also contains file validation, and displays a vast list of topology information from molecular descriptions all the way down to atomic descriptions.
