MOV File Extension Description

The QuickTime program uses the file extension MOV to provide the container for multimedia files. Basically, files with the .mov file extension can contain one or more tracks and each of the tracks can store a particular type of data including: video, effects, audio and text sometimes for subtitles. Additionally, each track within the files with the .mov file extension can contain media stream digitally encoded through the use of a specific codec or a reference of data to the media streams situated in another file.

The tracks within the files with the .mov file extension are also maintained in a hierarchical data structure that can consist of objects referred to as atoms. Within the QuickTime program, a single atom can be a parent to other atoms or it can also contain edited data or media though it cannot perform both.

Through the use of the MOV file extension, the QuickTime program has the capability to contain references for abstract data used for the media data and the separation of the media offsets from the media data and the edit lists of the tracks. The usage of the file extension MOV enable the QuickTime program to be suitable for editing.

The files with the .mov file extension must contain movie atoms, which, in turn, can contain either the indication to one or more alternate movie sources peripheral to the files or the movie structure. There are several fundamental atom types within the files with the .mov file extension and these are: the ?ftyp? for file type compatibility, ?moov? for movie resource metadata, ?mdat? movie sample data, ?free? and ?skip? for the unused space within the file, ?wide? for the reserved space, and the ?pnot? for the reference to movie data preview.

Incorporating such atoms enables the file extension MOV to be extensible; new atom types can be introduced from time to time. Additionally, this feature allows the files with the .mov file extension to be widened without damaging the functionality of existing applications and also provide measures of forward compatibility.
