The MIO file extension may contain documents, spreadsheets or any number of data. Generic files can be viewed by a number of Mioplanet software, which allows them to be exported to a number of platforms such as desktop computers, handheld devices and mobile phones. The MioEngine can read the generic format, which is the basis for several Mioplanet applications.

The program iPhoto 4 also uses the MIO file extension. The application is used to download photos from the Internet. Keronsoft developed it. Users can input a URL and the program will automatically detect digital images from the site and download them. The program uses the .mio file extension for its program file. Files with the MIO file extension contain resources needed by the software.
