MID File Extension Description
The Musical Instrument Digital Interface format, or more commonly known as MIDI, generates a standard sequential sound file that takes the .mid file extension. The file extension .mid acts as storage for music information, like identifying the specific notes that are played and the particular portion of the file where they are played, including the volume and sustainability attributed to each note. Other contents of the file extension .mid may include the particular MIDI controller information of the instrument, hardware device, and sustain pedal data among others. Software instruments are capable of playing back the .mid file extension, but the actual audio data is not contained within the audio file.
Unlike other music format files, the .mid file extension is only capable of storing music, but not the voices that usually accompany music. The file extension .mid does not store digitized audio data, but only various tracks with specific instrument designation including different musical effects. This property makes the file extension .mid vulnerable to the quality and capability of the audio card that is installed in the system. The .mid file extension relies on specialized software for music in order to be produced, and allow the division of the tracks to their respective instrument classification.
The file extension .mid is also a representation of the interchange format, which is applied by the software application MapInfo. The file extension .mid, in this context, is commonly paired with the MIF format file, which is usually utilized for GIS software applications. The original intent for the production of the .mid file extension was to generate an application package that was not only simple to deploy, but also required minimal computing power.
The MapInfo program also provided the foundation for the mapping functionalities, initially presented by Microsoft in their various product lines, more specifically with the Microsoft Map, that is associated with Microsoft Excel. The file extension .mid also provided the concept for the MapPoint software application that replaced the Microsoft Map program. The Oracle 8i database likewise benefited from the inception of the file extension .mid, for its spatial cartridge.
