MID File Extension Description

The Musical Instrument Digital Interface format, or more commonly known as MIDI, generates a standard sequential sound file that takes the .mid file extension. The file extension .mid acts as storage for music information, like identifying the specific notes that are played and the particular portion of the file where they are played, including the volume and sustainability attributed to each note. Other contents of the file extension .mid may include the particular MIDI controller information of the instrument, hardware device, and sustain pedal data among others. The file extension .mid, in this context, is commonly paired with the MIF format file, which is usually utilized for GIS software applications. The original intent for the production of the .mid file extension was to generate an application package that was not only simple to deploy, but also required minimal computing power.

The MapInfo program also provided the foundation for the mapping functionalities, initially presented by Microsoft in their various product lines, more specifically with the Microsoft Map, that is associated with Microsoft Excel. The file extension .mid also provided the concept for the MapPoint software application that replaced the Microsoft Map program.
