IO File Extension Description

The file extension .io is used when creating codes with the Modula-3 programming language. The Modula-3 language is a rarely used compiled language that has limited support for object-oriented programming. The language is an improvement on the Modula-2 that was being used by the Digital Equipment Corporation?s System Research Center.

The Modula-3 programming language to mark object files that can be used as basis for source codes uses files with the IO file extension. While the programming language is not often used for the creation of applications, the language is being taught as part of comparative language courses.

The CPIO program also uses the file extension .io. CPIO is an archiving program that was originally developed as part of the Programmer?s Workbench version of the Unix platform. The CPIO program was meant to store archived files, like those with the .io file extension, in a tape device.

Archives with the IO file extension are created with the binary format. Compression is often done with the GNU zip method. The GNU zip method comes from free software that was used in early Unix systems. It is a compression method used to compress single files with the DEFLATE algorithm. The CPIO program uses these tools to create an archive that contains a single continuous stream of data from files and directories.

The Io programming language also uses the file extension .io. The language is mainly an object oriented language that uses prototypes. This means that the codes used for Io are based on relationships between objects. Io also creates prototype codes and builds on them for further development.

The programming language was developed by Steve Dekorte. Other object-oriented programming languages in use heavily influenced it at the time. Io creates source codes that take up little space on a hard disk. Code resources from other programming languages can also be used with this language.

Source codes created with the Io programming language are given the file extension .io. They are then processed by a virtual machine for execution.
