File Extension .IN$ Author: Hewlett Packard

What is the IN$ File Extension?

The .IN$ File Extension is part of a command file needed to install and associate new applications with the interface of the New Wave product by Hewlett Packard.

In the early versions of Windows (2.0 to 3.1), when the concept of a graphic user interface was still new for MS Windows, the same era when organizing of desktops objects and computer files through icons and folders were just being introduced, HP created a desktop tool called New Wave.

Introduced in 1989, New Wave made quite a splash in the computer industry, as it provides an easier and more natural way to organize and utilize Windows applications and files on a computer's desktop. One of the file types associated with the New Wave application was the IN$ file extension.

Files with the .IN$ file contain necessary information needed by New Wave to install another object in its graphic user interface. Important entries in the New Wave installation file with the file extension IN$, should contain the class name, path of important files, functions supported by the application, and all pertinent installation data utilized by the new object at run time.

When the IN$ file is opened by New Wave, it invokes it creator object and passes to it the folder or path information, so that the system can locate in the installation disk the files that has to be loaded to the computer. After copying these system files to the New Wave system directory, it calls another system function to associate the new application to the system or user defined application icon.

When such icon is clicked, the New Wave Office interface object management facility (OMF), will be able identify the path and the specific executable file it will call. Once the association of the application and the icon is completed, some housekeeping tasks have to be executed in order to ensure that all temporary files used during the installation process were deleted, and utilized system resources were freed.

Despite the new concepts introduced by HP's New Wave computing environment for Windows, it was only able to sustain the application prior to Windows 95, as the technology shift of Microsoft to this version of their operating system made it hard for HP to follow and update New Wave.
