IFF File Extension Description
The IFF file extension was used for bitmap graphics and sound files in Amiga Systems. This line of personal computers was developed by Amiga in 1982, and was based on microprocessors in the Motorola 68k series. The Amiga Operating System custom chipsets features advanced sounds and graphics. Sound files and bitmap graphics were stored in files with the .iff file extension.
Graphics files with the .iff file extension contain a pix map, and is the format used to be able to store digital images in Amiga. It also contains map bits, which is an array that is spatially mapped. The graphical user interface of Amiga Systems used files in the .iff file extension for its graphic subsystem.
Amiga systems had a sound ship called Paula that stores sound files in the .iff file extension. It has a four-channel sound support, two for the right speaker, and another two for the left. The sound chip has a volume control of 6 bits and an 8-bit resolution. Files in the .iff file extension can be read by Paula directly from the computer?s RAM, by utilizing DMA or direct memory access.
Sound files that are stored in the .iff file extension can be played back without intervention from the CPU. The sound quality produced by Amiga were popular features that made it stand-out, including its hardware that can be easily addressed by the operating system.
Amiga computers were a prominent figure in video production and desktop videos, being the low cost alternative to IBM and Apple computers. It shows bitmap files in the .iff file extension and animated full screen graphics from 32 - 4096 colors. This capability made Amiga preferred by applications, because it gave the capability to create CGI effects and character generation.
