DIZ File Extension Description

The DIZ file extension is associated to ZIP files, and are text files that give a description of the files or program that are in a ZIP archive. Files in the .diz file extension contain brief content of the description of files included in an archive. Files with the .diz file extension are usually named as FILE_ID.DIZ, where file identification is represented by FILE_ID.

Files with the .diz file extension were initially used in the distribution of files through a BBS or Bulletin Board System. Information contained in files with the .diz file extension gave system administrators descriptions, which proved to be helpful for every file that is uploaded to the BBS.

Bulletin boards generally accept files that are uploaded by a user. Normally, the BBS software asks the user to give a description for the file to be uploaded, but more often than not, these descriptions are not useful. Operators of Bulletin Board Systems had to spend countless hours by going through the description of the upload, editing, and correcting it.

To address this problem, the inclusion of files with the .diz file extension in ZIP archives was implemented. FILE_ID is known to mean File identification, and DIZ means ?Description in ZIP file?. During the days when BBS was popular, ZIP was the archive type commonly used and is the common name used for this format.

The DIZ file extension with FILE_ID.DIZ files was developed by Michael Leavitt, and he originally used this format for his personal BBS, the PCBoard. It was created for the purpose of easily letting authors of software to give a description of their work, without having to manually type in each time the description for an uploaded file is needed.

This later became the standard file that provides descriptions of files in ZIP archives, and was supported by the Association of Shareware Professionals and Clark Development, of which Michael Leavitt was an employee of. The file specification was released later and other BBSes were encouraged to use and support the DIZ file extension.
