The file extension DIF stands for Data Interchange Format, and it was developed for importing and exporting single spreadsheets among different spreadsheet applications. The program VisiCalc was the first known spreadsheet that was made available for personal computers. This made the use of computer from a hobby, to a business tool for many users. In just six years, the VisiCalc program had sold 700,000 units. Other spreadsheet programs like the dBase, FileMaker, Framework, Gnumeric, Lotus 1-2-3, Multiplan, StarCalc, and many more supports and uses the file extension DIF.

This DIF file extension can be opened, viewed, and modified in different text file formats. The users with the DIF file extension easily handle the importation and exportation of single spreadsheets between all the other spreadsheet programs. The importation of spreadsheets, as well as the exportation, is done with a single spreadsheet only, saved with the DIF file extension, and not applicable to multiple spreadsheets in a single workbook; yet the process is still much easier compared to converting these files and then importing or exporting them.
