DCF File Extension Description

The DCF file extension is used to mark audio files that are covered by Digital Rights Management. Files with the .dcf file extension contain the audio file that can be played once permission is granted. The file that contains the permission to play the media comes in a separate file.

Protected audio files that have the file extension .dcf can only be played if the content player is able to open copyrighted files. Since these are DRM Content File Format files, they cannot be copied or shared via peer-sharing networks. The use of files with the DCF file extension is restricted to one user only.

Since the permission to play the media is encoded in a separate file, audio files that have the .dcf file extension can be downloaded or copied and the rights can be added at a later time. DRM Content Delivery audio files are often used for protected content for mobile phones.

The .dcf file extension also applies to archived and copied files made by the Disk Copy Fast program. The Disk Copy Fast program creates fast copies of floppy disks by saving them to disk image files with the DCF file extension. Disc image files with the DCF file extension can completely replicate all the contents of the floppy disk copied. This is because the Disk Copy Fast application copies information on the sector level, overriding the file system.

Disk Copy Fast Disc Image Files have file headers, which give a basic summary and description of the file and its contents. These files are made up of bit streams wherein the copied sectors of data are encoded.

The DCF file extension is also used by the dictionary utility of the WordExpress 2.0 program. WordExpress is an application for the creation and editing of text-based documents. The software has a dictionary file that can check for spelling and grammar corrections. The WordExpress 2.0 program also has a thesaurus function that is assisted by the dictionary.
