DBL File Extension Description
Running under Microsoft Windows operating systems, the DBL file is under the full name ?wpa.dbl? and is described as a Windows Product Activation File. This .dbl file holds information on the hardware configuration of the Microsoft Windows XP installation. The content is created using the RC-4 encryption database, usually through Microsoft Visual Basic. The data inside include:
Expiration data of your Windows XP installation
Activation confirmation data
Hardware configurations, when your copy of Windows XP is activated (usually after installation) after the hardware detection protocol of the OS.
When the wpa.dbl file is created in the system, it will have a total file size of 2Kb. Upon activation of Windows XP, the system will record the data directly into the file itself; thus, boosting the file size to 12Kb or 13Kb.
When XP boots up, the system will retrieve the information inside the DBL file and compare it with the hardware configuration detected by the OS. When a change is found, the system will automatically update the wpa.dbl file, and the original data will be kept in the .dbl file as reference.
Note, however, when the Windows XP operating systems detect frequent hardware changes, the wpa.dbl file will be reverted back to its original form with the 2Kb file size.
Many Windows XP users are utilizing the file as a back-up measure when they reload the OS every time they change hardware configurations, or even when the system has problems regarding hardware changes. You can copy the file to another location on your hard disk, which can be used to rollback your system to its original working state later on.
Another tip is that when the WPA.DBL file is deleted from its containing folder, the user will be forced to reinstall and reactivate Windows XP to avoid any serious errors in their system. Also, the DBL file will not be included in the Windows XP system restore feature.
