BIB File Extension Description

The BIB file extensions are database files that contain texts used with BibTeX. These documents in the .bib file extension contain a reference list that has been formatted by BibTeX. This program is usually used with LaTeX, and allowed bibliographies published and searched by the use of some standard commands.

BibTeX files with the .bib file extension contain bibliographies for articles, books, technical reports, and research papers. A file entry in the BIB file extension is formatted as follows:

@BOOK {citation key,

AUTHOR = "Author name",

TITLE = "Title of book",

PUBLISHER = {Name of publisher},

ADDRESS = {Location published} ?????

Files with the .bib file extension are a standard used by all platforms, and can be managed and viewed on multiple desktop systems. It uses a style that is independent and text-based for listing bibliography items. Files in the .bib file extension can contain some standard entries such as the Publisher?s address, an annotation, the name of the author, the book title, chapter number, cross-reference, edition, name of the editor etc?.

Leslie Lamport and Oren Patashnik developed BibTeX in 1985. It allowed users to cite sources easily and consistently, by separating information presentation from bibliographic information.

There are a number of tools that can handle files in the .bib file extension, as well as export and import them. These utilities can convert BiBTex files in the .bib file extension into listings in XHTML, for reference management, and for interaction with BiBTex database styles for citation of references. The same principle for separating content and style is used by the LaTeX program as well. The software for reference management all use files in the .bib file extension as its primary language.

The BIB file extension is also known to be simply used as bibliography files composed of text and are stored with a format in ASCII. These can simply be viewed using a text editor.
