AMR File Extension Description

What is File Extension .AMR?

The Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction is represented by the .AMR File Extension type (Adaptive Multi-Rate) codec, which is commonly implemented in GSM mobile telephony technology.

Open AMR File Extension

If .AMR files wont open on your computer then follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you have one of the programs above installed. If you do and .AMR files still wont open then proceed to step two below.
  2. Verify that Windows is set to open .AMR files with the appropriate program. The easiest way to do this is to download Filecure and then select the manage tab on the left. This feature is available free in the Filecure application.
  3. If the problem persists then download Filecure if you haven't already, and Click the big green "Start Scan" Button. It takes about 30 seconds to scan your computer for all file extension associations. Once the scan is finished you will see if any problems are detected. If so then Click the Green "Fix Now" Button.
  4. Try to open your .AMR File again, The problem should be fixed.

How AMR Files work

The codec normally utilizes the default file extension .AMR, for audio files that are compressed with the algorithm. The .AMR file extension functions by lowering the compression rate when it detects an increase in cellular signal interference, which translates to better error correction handling. The file extension .AMR is also utilized in harmonizing the various codec standards, being applied by the different systems of cellular service providers.

AMR Compression Format

The .AMR file extension compression format is optimized for usage with speech coding technology, making it an effective standard in cellular mobile telephony transmissions. The process of adaptation, implemented by the file extension .AMR, includes the selection of any of the different eight bit rates depending on the associated conditions for the linking of each.

Recorded spoken audio via the mobile telephone device normally carries the .AMR file extension, which is commonly characterized by short voice recordings that can be converted into other popularly used audio formats, with the use of commercially available converter applications. Being identified as an audio codec, the .AMR file extension is likely to fail in comparison when used with other audio sources like a music recording for example, which is better applied with the MP3 or similar algorithm codec's.

Cellular Networks Use AMR Type Compression

Compression of the human speech in cellular technology is commonly associated with the MMS sending capability of many cellular networks, where a voice recording is usually sent which contains messages, greetings, reminders, or any similar purpose. The bit rates of the file extension .AMR range from 4.75, 5.15, 5.90, 6.70, 7.40, 7.95, 10.2 and 12.2 kilobytes per second, are founded on the 160 samples contained per frames that last for 20 milliseconds each.

ACLEP is only one of the compression techniques associated with the file extension .AMR; other algorithms include DTX (Discontinuous Transmission), VAD (Voice Activity Detection) and CNG (Comfort Noise Generation), which are utilized based on the best mode that is applicable for the locally available radio channel and its corresponding capacity.
