File Extension .ADX Author: CRI Middleware Company

Files in the ADX file extension are files that are used to store audio files and compression formats, developed by CRI Middleware. The ADM file extension is used in video games. The format at which the ADX file extensions were encoded was in the same mindset as that of the ADPCM format. Given the small storage size of the ADX file extension, the sound quality stored and produced is impressive. The most noteworthy feature is its ability of looping the sound. This has been proven to be of much use when integrated with various games; the ADX file extension can be used as background, and/or environmental effects in games.

Some gaming consoles that have adopted the format are:

Sega Dreamcast

Sony Playstation 2

Nintendo GameCube

Files with the .adx file extension have proven to be very efficient in its role. Because of this, it was the blueprint for another format that was used for voice recordings, the AHX format (AHX encoding uses a variant of the MPEG-2 audio format).

Files with the .adx file extension have a good range of frequencies it can capture. It supports the mainstream audio formats like 22050, 44100, and 48000. The sampling depth is capped at 16-bit. The ADX file extension also supports multiple channels of sound (up to 255), but can only render 2 channels (stereo).

The .adx extension also supports a simple encryption key, where XOR data values are retrieved from a key generator program. This procedure is very easy to decrypt; although easily decrypted, the files are still in an unusable state. When used with the XOR values, files of the ADX extension are in nature, symmetric. The same method used to encrypt is the same method used to decrypt. This is done with an ?encryption key?. The key is comprised of three 16-bit data values (the multiplier, an increment, and start values for the key generator). By standard, files with the ADX extension, in a single game, will use only one key.
