File Extension .ADL Author: Quarterdeck Office Systems (QEMM and DESQview), CompuServe (OzWin), openEHR Foundation (Electronic Health Records systems), BOC Group (ADONIS)

the QEMM program uses the file extension ADL. QEMM is the Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager. The program can allocate and reallocate blocks of memory. This allows the user to manage programs that use particular resources and processes. The program was originally developed for the DOS platform by Quarterdeck. The Symantec Corporation later purchased quarterdeck.

The programs MCA Adapter Description Library use the file extension .adl. The MCA Adapter is a graphics card. Files with the ADL file extension are used to retain information on the processes generated by the MCA graphic card.

The OzWin program also uses the ADL file extension. This application was created to connect machines to the CompuServe Information Service (CIS). CIS was the first Internet service available commercially. At the time of the OzWin application?s popularity, users paid an hourly rate for connecting to CompuServe.

OzWin allowed users to connect to CIS only in order to download received messages and send outgoing ones. The application then disconnects from the service. Users can compose messages while offline. The ADL file extension is used to mark messages that need to be sent out or need further attention.

The ADL file extension is also used by the Archetype Definition Language developed by the openEHR Foundation. The goal of the openEHR Foundation is to create standards for distributing medical records on the Internet. The Archetype Definition Language was developed to create definite parameters for searches on Electronic Health Records systems.

The program DESQview also uses the ADL file extension. The application was developed for the DOS platform. The application allowed several programs to run simultaneously. The applications ran in several windows. DESQview used the .adl file extension to store program resources.

The ADONIS program also uses the ADL file extension. The application uses analysis tools to test and create business processes. Files that contain business models and groups exported from the database use the ADL file extension. Other business management programs from the BOC GROUP also use these files.
