File Extension .A Author: Jean Ichbiah, Free Pascal

The file extension A is used for saved Ada program files. Ada is an object oriented programming language named after the first computer programmer, Ada Lovelace. This programming language was originally created for integration on real time systems. Different features of this language include modular mechanism packages, parallel processing of tasks, run time checking of errors, generics, exception handling, and dynamic dispatch.

The Ada programming language, which makes use of the A file extension, is able to maintain a huge number of compile time checks for evading errors that run undetected but will be generated when loaded in other languages where it would require external checks to be included in the source codes. This programming language has a dynamic management of memory.

This type of memory management is type-explicit, and it requires installation of the Unchecked_Deallocation package in order to be capable of freeing up the reserved memory space. The syntax used in this programming language is very simple and easy to read. It prefers English words and offers few choices in the way basic operations are performed. This simplifies the process. Ada uses mathematical symbols for its mathematical operations but avoids using any other symbols. Its code blocks uses begin, end, and declare keywords.

The file extension A is also used by the application Free Pascal as an archived file for Linux or DOS versions. Free Pascal (also known as FPK Pascal) is a Pascal compiler for 32 and 64-bit computers. Different versions are available for different processors and are compatible with several operating systems including Linux, Macintosh OS classic, Mac OS X/Darwin, Win 32, Win 64, Win CE, DOS, OS/2, Netware, and MorpOS.

The Free Pascal compiler uses syntax that is compatible with Turbo Pascal 7.0 and Delphi. There is also a compatibility mode for Mac Pascal that is provided for users of Apple computers. Free Pascal, the compiler that uses the A file extension, also supports different operations such as function overloading, global properties, and operator overloading.
