In Windows 95, there are two types of WinPortrait drivers. These are the accelerated drivers that take full advantage of the speed-drawing capabilities of each chip and the PCI Secure drivers that comes equipped with the capability of using the PCI bus in order to conduct drawing and modifying methods on the video display.
The wpctrl95.exe process is the WinPortrait driver used to install video display for its rotation operation. This process is installed using the Change Display Type from the Display Properties dialog. During installation, WinPortrait makes the following changes to the system:
Copies the wpctrl95.exe EXE, winphook.dll DLL, wpinfo.exe file, refresh.exe file, wp????.drv, winp95.txt, ???.vxd to the Windows\ System directory;
Adds the wpctrl95 to the LOAD line in the win.ini file;
Updates the registry to reflect the new driver and resolution;
Fore Secure drivers execute methods that enable the wpinfo to be added to the file autoexec.bat.
The wpctrl95.exe process provides dynamic resolution change even without restarting. It has the ability to choose between all of the resolutions supported by your board/driver combination, in both landscape and portrait orientations. When you use the Display Properties dialog to change resolution or orientation, the starting settings will also be changed for your next Windows 95 session.
The file wpctrl95.exe provides a small Pivot taskbar icon that will pop up a menu allowing you to rotate, select any available portrait or landscape resolution, and launch the refresh meter. This taskbar icon can be used as an alternative method for rotating the screen image.
The inclusion of the Refresh Meter is automatically included during the installation process of WinPortrait. This is an application that provides the main program with the capability of creating analog metering methods in order to launch measuring systems intended for the vertical refresh rate. You can check the refresh rate by choosing Refresh from the pop-up menu of the wpctrl95.exe file icon on the taskbar. This file also supports automatic setting of the vertical refresh rate for selected board/chip combinations.
Auto-refresh is set up the first time you run Windows 95 with the wpctrl95.exe process. A left-click of the mouse on the application icon will launch a set of menu options, and selecting the Preferences option will provide you with the capability of Lowering the auto-refresh rate or even totally disabling the auto-refresh feature.
