Windows Media Connect is a Microsoft technology that enables a Digital Media Receiver to play music, video, or photos stored on your computer. A Digital Media Receiver is a home theatre device that can be connected to a computer network so it can retrieve and play media files such as music, pictures, or video. Some DMR devices compatible with Windows Media Connect are Xbox 360, Roku SoundBridge, and DLink MediaLounge.
The wmccfg.exe process enables the Windows Media Connect application to have your DMR equipment in one room to connect wirelessly to your computer in another room, and play music files stored on that computer. The DMR device has no storage capacity of its own, thus streaming the music is done through the wmccfg.exe application.
Windows Media Connect has no About command that you can use to display the version number of the program. Nevertheless, Windows Media Connect 1.0 can be distinguished from Windows Media Connect 2.0 by looking at the file name that runs and configures it. The mswmc.exe process is the main executable of the Windows Media Connect 1.0 while the wmccfg.exe file configures version 2.0.
The standalone version of Windows Media Connect software is no longer available for download. This application is now improved and is incorporated with Windows Media Player. The media sharing feature in WMP 11 lets you stream music, pictures, and video from your computer to devices that are connected to your wireless home network.
You can use the wmccfg.exe process to connect your DMR to your computer by using the following:
Hub or switch
Ad Hoc Wireless Network
This is a safe process. There is no necessity to remove this process from your system or change it in any way.
