Microsoft Word is word processing software bundled with the Microsoft Office Suite. As it became the dominant word processor today, Word documents (.DOC) became the de facto standard of document file formats due to their popularity.
The winword.exe process is the main executable of the Microsoft Office Word application. It has the normal.dot as its master template from which all Word documents are created. This template contains all the default settings such as font types, text layout, and margins.
Like other Microsoft Office applications, the winword.exe program includes macros and embedded programs. It originally used the WordBasic language but was changed to Visual Basic for Applications as of Word 97. The macro security settings in the winword.exe application can be regulated when macros are used and adjusted by the user.
The winword.exe file allows files in binary file format to implement OLE structured storage to manage the structure of its file format. Because OLE behaves like conventional hard drive file system made of several key components, each word document is composed of big blocks, which are almost 512-byte chunks. Hence, the file size of a Word document will always be a multiple of 512.
However, the new file format for the winword.exe application has moved towards the XML-based file format, the Microsoft Office Open XML. By saving the documents in XML format, developers will be able to separate the contents that were limited by the binary format.
The winword.exe file uses the document protection process that can be fine-tuned to control document, content, formatting, or both. The security features allow the user to configure, which part of the document can be modified and which one are restricted. A user or a certain number of users can selectively restrict the content, layout, or format.
This is a safe process. There is no necessity to remove this process from your system or change it in any way.
