Description:

The usb.exe process is installed along with the driver for USB devices. The filename usb.exe is provided by the manufacturer of the device to be able to run and be accessed in Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. This background task allows access to a Universal Serial Bus which is a serial bus standard available to interface devices. USB is designed to let peripherals connect, by utilizing a single standard interface socket that also improves capabilities for plug and play by allowing connection or disconnection of devices without having to reboot the computer or hot swapping.

The usb.exe process allows the connection of a USB device that is not manufacturer or device driver specific. The file usb.exe lets you plug in your computer mouse devices, keyboards, joysticks, game pads, digital cameras, printers, scanners, flash drives and personal media players. The usb.exe file provides a standard connection method to the USB port for many of these devices and is used extensively for non-networked printers.

The communication between your computer and a USB device is based on pipes or logical channels which are connections from the host controller to the logical entity on the USB device called the endpoint. These endpoints reside in the connected device and can transfer data in or out of the device in one direction only. Once connected, the enumeration process sends a reset signal to the device and the speed is determined during this process. The device set-up information is evaluated and the usb.exe process is loaded for communication and to set the USB device into a configured state.

The USB design is standardized by the USB-IF or USB Implementers Forum composed of notable members from electronics and computer industries like Apple Inc, Agere, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Microsoft and NEC. This non-profit organization facilitates development of compatible USB devices and peripherals and promotes the benefit of USB and its specifications.
