The file sbmx.exe is a SoundMAX MPU401 MIDI device emulator for x86 VM DOS games/apps.

MPU is the term for MIDI Processing Unit. The MPU-401 is an important but already an obsolete standard for MIDI interfaces for personal computers. The hardware MPU-401 interface is the primary interface for communicating MIDI data to and from the host personal computer.
