The process reboot.exe has been first used on the Disk Operating System version of Microsoft platform. Basically, this file performs a systems safekeeping function by allowing the computer to reload itself to get rid of the unnecessary data and operations while preserving the settings and files saved from the previous session. This process is called rebooting, or restarting the entire system straight from the initial loading.

This file is commonly included with the complete installation of the default package of Windows operating system. From its original DOS file, to the Windows NT version where it has gained its system utility popularity, the publisher of this file has made several developments for the reboot.exe file to compatibly run under the latest Windows Vista operating system, considering the latter mentioned platforms complexity and operation sensitivity.

The reboot.exe file also functions in the system as the facility, which sets the delays of rebooting by the use of the command line prompter. This file advocates the soft reboot activity or the reloading of the entire system without the pulling out the power or total system shut down. With its restart function, the reboot.exe process perpetrates a clean and harmless boot of the system.

Aside from the operating system installation package, the reboot.exe process is also sometimes included with the motherboard software or relative hardware driver. Still, this process should be well kept by an antivirus or other system protecting applications, to prevent it from being corrupted, which may result into uncalled rebooting and other related incidences.
