Description:
The main process file for the PowerChute software is the file pwrchute.exe. The basic function of the pwrchute.exe program is to implement the PowerChute software in the system, which is an application, designed to control the uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) produced by APC.
In order for the program pwrchute.exe to perform its basic function, an Uninterruptible Power Supply, or UPS, must be attached to the system. The hardware is simply a battery backup device, which maintains a continuous supply of electric power to the computer by supplying power from a separate source when the utility is not available. The file pwrchute.exe together with the attached UPS in the computer, handles the correction of power problems, which include a power failure, voltage sag, voltage spike, under-voltage or brownout, over-voltage, line noise, frequency variation, switching transient, and harmonic distortion.
When the PowerChute software is installed in the system, the file pwrchute.exe monitors the APC Smart-UPS unit via a serial RS-232 or other USB connector cables. The application pwrchute.exe will be able to inform the system whether the computer is running on line current or backup battery. The file also shows how much charge is left. The PowerChute application can be configured to send a Shutdown or Hibernate command based on the amount of charge left on the batteries.
The pwrchute.exe process will run the system on battery power until it is almost discharged. This is especially useful when the user experiences any power failure. The file also performs a managed shutdown or hibernation before total power loss. This is to ensure that there will not be any loss of data or damage to the system. The user only needs to turn the UPS and the computer back on when the power has returned.
During installation of the file pwrchute.exe, it will scan the computer for any compatible APC UPS units connected via USB or Serial cable. It will ask the user to confirm that the unit detected is correct. The user may need to restart the system to ensure that the file pwrchute.exe and the APC service load properly on startup. This enables that system to be protected automatically whenever it is running.
