Description:
The keyboard.exe file is an application also known as the Labtec keyboard utility. The keyboard.exe application is used to set function keys to control specific keys in the keyboard, or it simply serves as a shortcut key. For instance, if the user wants to decrease the volume, the user must look for the specific key on the keyboard assigned to the volume to perform the operation.
The keyboard.exe file has an icon placed in the Windows System Tray for easy access. When the user interface for the keyboard.exe application is opened, the user can choose to open the Keyboard properties or the Settings for the Labtec keyboard. If the user chose to open the Keyboard properties from the keyboard.exe application interface, it will display two tabs. The first tab is labeled Speed while the other one is labeled Hardware.
Under the Speed tab, the user can set how long the cursor will be displayed on the screen or the repeat delay and the user can also set the repeat rate of the cursor. Under the Hardware tab, it will display the keyboards connected to the computer. There can be one or more keyboards attached to a computer depending on the available ports on the CPU. Keyboard ports can either be serial (round connection), USB or wireless. On the Hardware tab, it also displays the manufacturer and the status of the keyboard whether it is working or not. The user can also troubleshoot the keyboard if it is not working.
When the user opts to choose the Settings option on the keyboard.exe application menu, it displays three tabs in the interface, which are Keys, OSD and Key Status. Under the Keys tab, the user can choose several options associated with the keyboard such as Volume, Browser search, Browser favorites, Media Play/Pause and the like. Under the OSD tab, the user can set the color for a specific function. The last tab, which is the Key Status, shows the option to display the Key Lock Status in the System Tray. Key Lock status is composed of Scroll Lock, Num Lock and Caps Lock. If the Caps Lock is on the icon for the Caps Lock is highlighted on the System Tray.
The keyboard.exe file has registry entries found in the registry locations HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Run, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ RunServices, and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Run.
