Description:
The Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) uses the EXE inetinfo.exe for debugging as well as handling ASP.NET requests.
All Internet services (HTTP, SMTP, NNTP, FTP) provided by IIS are contained in the inetinfo.exe process. Requests from the TCP/IP subsystem are received by the inetinfo.exe file, which, in turn, directs the requests to the respective services. These services are made to interpret the requests, execute them and return the results to the client. All these services run within the inetinfo.exe process. This way, sharing cached data among the services is possible. Such cached data include file handles, account information and log file data.
The inetinfo.exe process runs in two modes: first in worker process isolation mode, and second in plain isolation mode. In IIS 6.0, the IIS runs in worker process isolation mode. When it has been executed in this mode, the inetinfo.exe process is deployed as an application with user-mode privileges. This means it is given the capability of hosting not only the IIS metabase but also services that are not Web-based. Such services can include FTP, SMTP and NNTP services. Hosting the metabase is no longer done by the inetifo.exe EXE but passes this task to the IIS Admin service. In IIS 5.0, IIS is executed as an application with isolation mode restrictions. In this scenario, the file inetinfo.exe is given the capability of hosting the active worker process running low level isolation ISAPI extensions and ISAPI filters as well as various other Web-based programs.
In the newer version of IIS, without importance being given to the particular use of a specific application isolation mode, the inetinfo.exe file executes its services as dynamic link libraries using the local system account. It is advisable to use caution when running services on the file inetinfo.exe given that a local system account can allow users access to all resources on the local computer. When running the inetinfo.exe process on computers connected to the Internet, it is better to have the system protected by a firewall. The user may also disable services that are not in use.
The IIS is shipped with Microsoft Windows Server used for Web applications. Newer versions developed by Microsoft Corporation promises server reliability and availability, management, scalability, and security.
