Description:
The application Hummingbird Inetd uses the process inetd32.exe when searching for connections requests and launching server daemons.
The Hummingbird Inetd (Internet Daemon) executable is widely used for its ability to conserve PC resources. It is able to conserve hard disk space because it invokes Internet servers only when a connection is requested. This allows for more efficient usage of PC resources where time and resources are spent only for establishing valid connections. The process inetd32.exe responds only to connections requests that it detects as valid which saves the system from using up resources just to simultaneously run several daemon processes with unclear requests. What it does is to wait in the background while monitoring specific ports for attempts from Internet servers to connect to the PC workstation. It only takes action when there is a request for connection and subsequently launches the appropriate server daemons.
Users will be able to take advantage of all the high-end features of a standard UNIX workstation when running the process inetd32.exe. This Internet Daemon can provide Windows PC platforms with UNIX-style services such as starting up from an initialization file (/etc/rc.d/rc.inet2) at boot time. The process inted32.exe can be used to provide peer-to-peer connectivity. It implements server functions for TCP/IP-based applications. This feature is applicable for PCs and workgroups using local area networks or wide-area networks. Because of this capability, the Hummingbird Inetd has been widely recognized as an effective solution for turning a low cost Windows desktop into a multi-purpose server.
By running the inetd32.exe application, Windows will be able to support a variety of Internet services. This includes Telnet servers that can access remote terminals; FTP servers for accessing remote files; and Line Printer servers which are typically used to process remote printing requests.
Administrators can also easily manage remote user access with the functionality of the Hummingbird Inetd. The inetd32.exe process assigns permissions for enhanced PC security and selectively enables or disables daemons to accommodate local requirements. With this, a larger number of sockets remain available for use by other network applications.
The process inetd32.exe supports several Daemon services, including bootpd for remote TCP/IP workstations, ftpd for FTP client file transfers, fingerd, lpd and telnetd for Telnet connections.
