The process indexcleaner.exe is part of the MRU-Blaster program, a cleaning utility from the company Java Cool Software LLC.

The indexcleaner.exe file can run at start up and primarily implements removal of the index.dat file in the Temporary Internet Files and cookies folder. This functionality is included in the MRU-Blaster program which is an application that detects and cleans MRU (most recently used) lists in the computer. The most recently used lists may contain valuable information such as the names and locations of the last files that have been accessed by the user. These MRU lists are actually located in the registry and works for almost any file type. With the MRU lists, anybody can take a look at what files the user opened/ saved or looked at. In many operating systems, the lists are displayed in drop-down menus automatically.

The MRU-Blaster describes itself as a privacy cleaning tool that performs scanning of the computer for most recently used entries, cookies and Internet cache files. After scanning these, the application then asks the users if they want to remove them. Accessing recently used files, documents and other is possible with MRU entries, which are left by almost any software.

The indexcleaner.exe file proves to be greatly useful when trying to cover up tracks to ensure privacy and security. It is able to delete the index.dat file, which contains information on what site the user has visited or the websites that were recently downloaded. By implementing this functionality for the MRU-Blaster, the indexcleaner.exe application also helps in freeing up valuable disk space.

Implementation of the MRU-Blaster can be scheduled according to user preference using the Task Scheduler program supplied with the MRU-Blaster program. The Schedulers program can trigger MRU cleanup based on the cleanup time configured by the user himself. The MRU-Blaster implements a silent command-line argument, which makes cleaning of MRU lists silently done by not displaying its window. This feature is useful when running the Task Scheduler on Windows.
