Description:

The Microsoft Internet connection sharing uses the process icsmgr.exe to relay all DNS and DCHP requests. Internet connection sharing provides for networked computers to share a single connection to the Internet.

The icsmgr.exe process makes it possible for users using multiple computers connected to the local area network (LAN) to perform different tasks simultaneously. It also allows a single user to access corporate e-mail accounts from a client computer while other users also connected to the LAN cannot. The icsmgr.exe process is also used to initiate Web-enabled programs (such as downloading updates), Microsoft NetMeeting, and other video conferencing programs.

The file icsmgr.exe uses dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) and network address translation (NAT) to execute Internet connection sharing. It routes TCP/IP packets from a small LAN to the Internet and maps the local computers' IP addresses to unused ports in the TCP/IP stack. The icsmgr.exe file sends to or from the IP addresses of the external adapter all packets entering or leaving the LAN.

Shared connections are made available to other computers by enabling Internet connection sharing in the Network Connections tab of the host computer. Other computers must similarly enable ICS in the Network Connections to be able to connect to and use the shared connection in the LAN. When implementing ICS, connected devices and software are provided with comprehensive protocol support. For example, users can play Internet games without making additional configuration, or a user may implement point-to-point tunneling protocol (PPTP) and virtual private networking (VPN) to access corporate network. The icsmgr.exe file also offers configuration for similar standard services and various configuration of NAT.

In enabling the icsmgr.exe files functions, it should be remembered that the ICS server computer will need to have two network connections-one connected to the Internet and another connected to the LAN. The connection can either be dial-up, via cable modem or any other broadband connection.

The icsmgr.exe process is bundled in Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows ME. It is not a component that can be downloaded.
